Rubella virus is a single-stranded RNA virus and the contagious infection with Rubella occurs worldwide. The virus is extremely dangerous for pregnant women that have no rubella immunity, since Rubella can infect the fetus causing Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). In the first trimester of pregnancy, CRS is more likely to cause major defects and often leads to miscarriage or a stillborn baby. After the 20th week of pregnancy, the problems are rare.
